Ever Get Distracted At Work?
Maybe It's Because You Have Too Many Good Ideas.
In the past, I have always thought that people who can concentrate for a long period of time are a “certain type of person” that I was not.
However, my yearning to be better at doing business seems to be one of the few things that trump my stubbornness. Also, I have come to learn that as we all move through our careers, our level of deep thinking needs to increase.

Therefore, I have become really interested in ideas, shortcuts, methods, suggestions and hacks to kick my brain back into gear if I feel a drift or rut. I have been constantly saving these articles and I just reviewed all of them from the past year and I have ranked them here. Love to hear any of your methods in the comments.

1) Intelligent people are more easily distracted at work, study claims
If we are alike, you skipped to the 10 tips at the bottom of this post. (I do the exercise thing -however minimal – when I catch myself in a rut in the day to hit reset. Usually a walk.) I found the idea of “ideas versus doing” the most confronting part of this article. I sometimes feel like I am forgoing time on all these other ideas when focusing one which can cause paralysis by analysis.

2) How To Prevent Technology From Becoming A Distraction
I found this one difficult until I found the technology button love of my life – Do Not Disturb. On iPhone, go into Settings > Do Not Disturb and you can choose the Favorites who can reach you or multiple callers. I really only want to hear about emergencies anyway.

3) 10 Distractions That Kill Workplace Productivity
UGH. Gives me anxiety about how much time I have wasted. But finding a solution involves admitting the problem. Read this and see the dangers and lets fix our days.

4) How Distractions At Work Take Up More Time Than You Think
I found this really made me think about two things: 1) The compounding effect of multiple people being distracted who are interdependent on each other when doing projects. If one person is distracted and misses a deadline, it throws off everyone else who is waiting on that work. http://blog.idonethis.com/distractions-at-work/. 2) It made me think of George Constanza when he realized you can just act angry to seem busy. I am always wary of “busy” people when I am wondering how effective they really are.

5) All It Takes Is A Mindful 10 Minutes
Ah, yes! Solution time. I have been wary of meditation because it has always seemed like something people that already have $100m plus do. Now I replace the word meditation with Mindful. It feels more purposeful for me. 10 minutes is about the limit for me to sit still and I usually use meditation audio like Headspace to bring me down a peg but then use the last 5 minutes to bring it to what I am going to do in next 24 hours.

Bonus Video: A Simple Way To Break A Bad Habit [A Ted Talk]
This is a video piece I really enjoyed. As someone who can be defensive about my own methods, this video positioned change in a very accessible way. It made me want to get better rather than questioning all the ways I got here.
